I know I should finish packing so I can be ready when Master Erik - TopicsExpress

I know I should finish packing so I can be ready when Master Erik arrives in a couple of hours, but I am in my writing chair and determined to make some progress on Chapter 5. Then its several hours with Erik, my son, and hubby before I pick up Charlotte Oliver and we head to Louisville. The girl has never been to the Kentucky State Fair (one of the best fairs anywhere). Gotta add that to her new experiences with Kally! I remember as a kid my mom worked at the Naval Ordnance Station in Louisville (now closed) and the fairgrounds were in between home and work. So she would let the five teenaged girls spend the day there, dropping us off and picking us up outside the gate (no charge!). Each of us had a bag lunch and 50 cents spending money. This was the early 70s, but 50 cents didnt buy a lot then either. lol But we usually made that money last ALL day. And then we just did all the free stuff. Lots of visits to the farm animal displays. This was my LEAST favorite part, altho I liked seeing the bunnies. (They had to see every freaking cow, pig, horse, chicken, pigeon, and whatever else was in there for hours and hours. It was stinky and I wasnt so much into the animals.) We then spent hours spent in Freedom Hall watching the saddlebreds compete for the upcoming Nationals (which will be this Saturday). It was air-conditioned and we ate lunch there and scored the horses in books right along with the judges. We watched the free entertainers. We all remember the lead singer in one of the bands. Man, he was cute (in a bad boy way) and I have their album here somewhere, but cant remember their names. Then there was the East Exhibit Hall with all the vendors giving away FREE STUFF! I now know it as swag, but we would grab one of the FREE plastic bags and get five sets of whatever was on the tables (there were five of us girls). We would sign up for giveaways. We won windows and all kinds of things my mom turned down. Then one time we won a trip to Cherokee Village, Arkansas. We didnt vacation much (kinda expensive with 7 kids), but they offered $25 in gas money, a free house, all in exchange for my parents sitting through a spiel trying to sell her a property. My mom could say no like nobodys business, so she said, lets do it. Wow, what a fabulously fun trip that was! Okay, enough of this trip down memory lane. My sister was at the fair the other night texting us the photos of Freddie Farm Bureau (this ginormous figure who talked to the kids). Some spotter was somewhere so it was like he was talking to you. She showed some of the barn animals and seconds after another sister asked said too bad they didnt have the fancy chickens anymore, she posted a pic of one. (Mary 1 has a thing for chickens--and horses.) Mary 5 shared pics of the Deep-fried Snickers and Twinkies. (We could never afford stuff like that on our 50 cents!) We couldnt ride the rides on the midway (altho most of that didnt really get going until the time we had to leave). When we were even older, we got to go to the free concerts. Tonight is Easton Corbin, but because we have so little time, were going to spend it exploring the fair instead. Then tomorrow morning, its off to New York City to meet up with Lisa Simo-Kinzer for the afternoon and evening. Were going to the 9/11 Memorial (and one of my readers and her daughter will join us). It will be VERY emotional, but then we will be off to dinner at an Irish pub that has two of my favorite dishes on their Thursday night specials--and they serve homemade brown bread (soda bread) with all of their meals! Okay, I could be working now--and WILL! Later!
