I know Ive been MIA with the Black History facts but I didnt forget. Check out 5, 6 & 7 for nice sports facts: Fact #1: George T. Sampson earned a patent in 1892 for inventing a clothes dryer that used heat from a stove. Fact #2: Granville Woods invented a number of devices related to railroad engineering, including air brake systems and what would become known as the third rail on modern tracks. He was also a pioneer in telegraph and telephone technologies, and would earn dozens of patents over his lifetime. Fact #3: Jan Ernst Matzeliger, of Surinamese and Dutch descent, invented the shoe-lasting machine, which connected the upper part of the shoe to the sole. His device, patented in 1883, greatly increased shoe productivity and made footwear more affordable. Fact #4: James Wests research in sound technology led to the development of foil-electret transducers, with the innovation used in 90 percent of contemporary microphones. West holds more than 250 patents and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1999. Fact #5: Long before Serena and Venus Williams were dominating womens tennis, there was Althea Gibson. In 1950, Althea became the first black woman to play at the US Nationals. She advanced to the second round of the tournament and showed many ignorant tennis fans that African Americans belonged on the tennis court. In 1957, she won the US Nationals and Wimbledon, and was welcomed home with a ticker tape parade in New York. Fact #6: In 2008, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt became the first man to ever set three world records in a single Olympic games. Fact #7: Ernie Davis was the first African-American athlete to be the No.1 pick in the NFL draft. Also the football star Ernie Davis was the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy.
