I know its prosaic and cliche to call on songs like this in difficult times, but the Broken Hallelujah, by Leonard Cohen, has always held a bittersweet and decidedly poetic place in my soul. Its undergone many lyrical and vocal adaptations over the years, so much so it sometimes seems nearly impossible to draw out from it the true meaning of these melancholic words. Im not sure I even listen to them anymore. Its the music itself and the way a song can weave a story and take you somewhere else for a moment and remind you that youre a story yourself. You are in one and the ending isnt written. Rufus Wainwrights version has always been my personal favorite. His nasal, lazy tone and half hearted diction capture the gloss-less, glow-less, win-less spirit of the story better than any other. Whenever I find myself in need of a good read I find this. https://youtube/watch?v=xR0DKOGco_o
