I know this much, I can no longer think in terms of right or left. I can no longer think in terms of conservative or liberal. To be a republican or a democrat means nothing in the context of constantly waffling ideologies. I believe it is time to redefine our labels and reset our loyalties. I have said it before, many of the men and women who want to lead us have no spine and no courage to examine the validity and reality of what they propose. The real war is not Democrat versus Republican, or liberal versus conservative. The new terms that need to be at the forefront of our discussions and take the place of current prevalent political philosophies are Populism versus the Republic. It is my opinion that Populism is the way in which leaders play with the dreams and hopes of a people by promising the impossible and manipulating them with what is popular. It is the method by which they take advantage of a people’s pain and misery, offer to take it away while intentionally leaving out all reason and logic in order to obtain personal power. Populism has impregnated all ideologies, right and left. Their main mechanism for manipulation is that someone is doing badly because someone else is doing well. What we need to reaffirm is that we can all do well. The fact that one person accumulates riches does not impede another from doing the same. But for this to be true we need the right kind of institutions, such as an ethical judicial system. Above all else we need to insist that our congressional system have respect and value for debates that use arguments based on reason and logic. A population that is not educated, one that obtains its values from what it sees on televisions, will not demand this type of discourse. This group of people will be easily manipulated by a simple appeal to their emotions and deepest passions. The only way to dismantle Populism is with the only real tool capable of providing and rescuing our institutions: arguments based on reason and logic that promote the exchange of ideas and real solutions. The only system I know that can do this is the Republic model of government. HES
