I like playing corny love songs from the 1970s on piano, so it got me to thinking that one of the corniest of all had to be Shannon by Henry Gross. He was more or less a one-hit wonder, but he did have that one big song from 1976 that left its mark on the music scene for a while way back when. Anyway, I have been trying to figure out how to play the song, but there were a few chords that I knew I wasnt getting right. I tried looking online, but all of the usual websites had only a very basic version that was not accurate. So I decided to email Mr. Gross himself, and ask if he could fill in the holes. I found his email address on his website (duh), and sent him an email. A few hours later, I received a reply with a nice note, along with the chords and words attached. How awesome is that? Either he is a very appreciative artist who is thrilled that someone remembers his music, or maybe he just didnt have a whole lot else going on this afternoon. For those who are interested, here it is: F GM Csus ANOTHER DAY IS AT END C Bb F DM MAMA SAYS SHE’S TIRED AGAIN DM/c EM7 A7 Bb Csus- C NO ONE CAN EVEN BEGIN TO TELL HER I HARDLY KNOW WHAT TO SAY BUT MAYBE IT’S BETTER THAT WAY IF PAPA WERE HERE I’M SURE HE’D TELL HER F GM F Bb sus- Bb SHANNON IS GONE I HOPE SHE’S DRIFTING OUT TO SEA F GM Eb sus- Eb Csus- C SHE ALWAYS LOVED TO SWIM AWAY F GM F Bb sus- Bb MAYBE SHE’LL FIND AN ISLAND WITH A SHADY TREE F Eb Bb DM G9 JUST LIKE THE ONE IN OUR BACKYARD MAMA TRIES HARD TO PRETEND THINGS WILL GET BETTER AGAIN SOMEHOW SHE’S KEEPING IT ALL INSIDE HER BUT FINALLY THE TEARS FILL OUR EYES AND I KNOW THAT SOMEWHERE TONIGHT SHE KNOWS HOW MUCH WE REALLY MISS HER SHANNON IS GONE I HOPE SHE’S DRIFTING OUT TO SEA SHE ALWAYS LOVED TO SWIM AWAY MAYBE SHE’LL FIND AN ISLAND WITH A SHADY TREE JUST LIKE THE ONE IN OUR BACKYARD JUST LIKE THE ONE IN OUR BACKYARD
