I listened to the whole speech that Ellen Page gave for the Human Rights Campaign. She said some very inspiring, wonderful, and true things that people should really hear. However, all anyone is focusing on is the fact that she came out. While I think it is so amazing and wonderful that she is finally able to now live openly and honestly, it sort of upsets me that that is the only thing people are paying attention to about her speech. As if that is now the only important aspect of her as a person or that is the only important thing she said during her speech. I encourage you to listen to the entire speech instead of just reacting to that one sentence about 6 minutes in. It just goes to show that our society is so hetero normative that we react with oh my god, shes a lesbian? Instead of wow, this is a really cool speech and she said a lot of really cool things and yay I like this lady. I dont know, just some thoughts. I just think people are shocked by and focused on the wrong things.
