I loved seeing this video (in German) about Helmut Deutsch, one of the most-sought-after classical vocal accompanists in the world. Currently a professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt, Deutsch gives master classes throughout Europe and Japan, and is a juror at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition. In this 2013 Bavarian Television documentary, he is joined by his former student Jonas Kaufmann, sopranos Diane Damrau and Juliane Banse, baritones Bo Skovhus and Michael Volle, and tenor Klaus Florian Vogt. Theres historic footage of Deutsch accompanying Hermann Prey. Ivis Bohlen wrote: Helmut Deutsch is a bit of a mumbler, to my American ears. Love watching Diana Damrau rehearse: she always uses her entire body, waving her arms around in a way I assume she doesnt do in an actual recital. In contrast Jonas Kaufmann spends a lot of his time with an arm wrapped across his chest in a way I would imagine was counterproductive but obviously works for him. Interesting to hear about the many, many other famous singers and conductors Helmut Deutsch has worked with going back to Karajan and Hermann Prey.
