I mentioned a while back that I got my Windows 8.1 laptop to successfully dual-boot with Linux Mint. Well, I di have some minor issues with it, so tonight I took the plunge and wiped everything. My new laptop is now running Ubuntu 14.04, and the minor issues cleared up. I assume its because of a kernel update? Anyway, no slow boot times, and no wi-fi issues that I can see. Im test driving the social media account integration, but so far its all pretty lame. For instance, Ubuntu suggested I install FacebookMessenger, Im using it right now and its only a browser shell. It looks and acts a lot like the Facebook Metro app in Windows 8. Lame :P I have my Google stuff integrated as well, but again, pretty lackluster. Dash search integration, not much else. So, Ill be removing those accounts and just stick with Firefox addons. Ill eventually be installing Grive Tools like I have on my two Mint installs, for Google Drive synching. I went with Ubuntu on this new laptop for two reasons: support, and a touchscreen-friendly desktop experience. However, I checked into it and it seems that there really is no support for multitouch in Linux. Theres an app, but it is unreliable. So I will miss two-finger scrolling and long-press functions on my touchscreen. On the other hand, my touchscreen experience on Windows 8 was a mixed bag. Id frequently switch back and forth between the screen and my touchpad. Anyway, other than advanced functions on both the touchpad and touchscreen noticably lacking on this system, everything else sems to be running about as well as when I was using Windows 8. Now, for those who may have been wondering: yes, you can run Ubuntu on a modern laptop in UEFI, no problem. Most Ubuntu derivatives also run no problem. But Im done working on this laptop for right now, I have some art to make..... on my Windows 7 machine XD
