I never thought that I would wholeheartedly agree with Rand Paul on anything, but he definitely hit the nail on the head with this one. Our police should not be another branch of the military. When I was in EMS school, we had an instructor that was a medic for the Irving SWAT team. (Before I go on, I must say that he was an incredibly good instructor who was charismatic, intelligent, and knowledgeable). What troubled me about him was his total militaristic SWAT mentality towards patients. For instance, he (in a macho fashion) bragged about how, when he has a patient who is having a seizure, he doesnt hold the patients head with his hands, he just puts his boot under their head so it doesnt hit the concrete so he doesnt get his hands dirty. There is a culture in SWAT teams that totally dehumanizes EVERYONE that they come into contact with. I have myriad personal examples of this mentality, exhibited by this instructor of mine. Rand Paul gets a few things wrong as to the sources of this Bush inspired anti-terror police militarization, but he really does get the majority of things right.
