I often get asked do I charge more if the horse is naughty & therefore takes longer to do, the answer is no, if you have to struggle for two to three hours to clip the horse due to its behaviour, then it should be sedated, not only is it dangerous to clip like this but the chances are that the horse will be even worse the next time as it will remember clipping as a bad & stressful experience. I do have bags of patience & am happy to work with nervous / young horses but I always try to do what is best for the horse in the long term so for a nervous horse a neck & belly clip is often sufficient, of course they are all different so I like to go in with an open mind & take each horse as I find it, out of approx 250 horses last winter there was only two which I had too stop for safety reasons both of which I went back a couple of days later when they were sedated & finished the job no probs.
