I only have one question: What happens to the pigs from whom we harvest the needed stem cells to make this stuff and the mares that we use to provide the necessary fetal horse serum? Sounds like same old, same old for these unfortunate souls and, likely, expanded profits for the Premarin farmers. No doubt it will help to eliminate the cruelty of factory farming and for that I am truly thankful. BUT, I fear this wonderful idea has more to do with improving human health and ameliorating environmental destruction (self interests) than ending animal suffering. Human selfishness, arrogance and a lack of compassion will still exist and until a new ethic regarding other sentient beings is realized, animal commodification and suffering will continue. Animals will still be subjected to cruelty in laboratories, puppy mills will still exist, religious rituals will still be practiced, etc., etc., etc. Norm Phelps expressed this idea quite well in an exchange of thoughts with Steve Best: " ... Human history demonstrates that whenever a system (economic, political, religious, whatever) is installed that is designed to end, or at least ameliorate, human oppression, it is fairly quickly corrupted into a new mechanism for the same old oppression....changing the social or economic system without first changing the moral standing of animals in the public consciousness would make no difference in the lives of animals." Until then, my friends, there will always be a battle to be won.
