I only remember a few things from when I read Frederick Douglass - TopicsExpress

I only remember a few things from when I read Frederick Douglass in high school. I remember being taught that it was abolitionist propaganda. I remember being taught that most slave owners were not that bad. I remember being told, with emphasis, that Douglass probably didnt even write it himself, that it was written for him by an abolitionist. All of this, in my young mind, impressed that the Narrative wasnt to be trusted, and as a result I largely dismissed and forgot most of what I read. Now Im reading it again, and my opinion is... Different. Experience and observation over the course of two decades has changed the narrative for me. Im left, among other more obvious emotions, feeling profoundly uncomfortable with the excellent education I received.
