I posted a couple of weeks ago about my boy Jasper. His tail was chewed down to the extent that we considered amputation at the time but it was still alive. After $900 in office visits and Rx the tail has healed except the original 2 or so. Despite a cone and an inflatable e-collar at the same time and sedatives he was still getting at it and licking the scab off. At our visit yesterday, the vet said she didnt know what else to do and was recommending amputation. Of course the wound from that would be at the same place and he would be able to continue his pattern, not to mention about $1000 plus meds and follow up visits. I still think i can get it healed and not resort to anything drastic. Trying now to keep it covered to discourage getting at it. And at her recommendation put a mixture of cayenne and vaseline on the bandage. Last week I switched him to grain free food and treats, including the pill pockets. I dont know that I can evaluate that impact though. He is out of his cone for the first time in 5 weeks. Just while I am home and awake. He got two bandages off though once was from him playing with my other lab. They havent done that since this began so I wanted him to have some fun. Any thoughts on how to keep him away from it the wound to allow the final healing? Up to now it has not been covered by bandages and he got at it every couple of days.
