I posted my good cancer news before learning that this horrible disease took the life of ESPN anchor Stuart Scott this morning, who battled it for nearly 8 years. Im not sure Stu ever announced where cancer struck him, but Ive been very open that mine was, and for the remainder of my life will always be, Prostate Cancer. And I will sweat every blood test going forward because cancer guarantees you absolutely nothing, yet is selfish and relentless in its ability to take everything. No shame in being afraid. Its a powerful motivator. My diagnosis and my personal battle is much different that Stuarts. Im well this day-this month, and the physican who bailed on me is long gone, because I fought to have my cancer diagnosed and caught very early, and because I refused to allow someone else to take charge of (and change) my healthcare beliefs. Guys, please take charge. You know your body better than anyone else ever will. If it just doesnt feel right, it probably isnt. Stubborn is not an option. Schedule and follow through with your annual physical. Have your PSA blood test and Digital Rectal Exam. Get your colonoscopy. Dont be embarassed to have that yeah, but conversation with your doctor. Im not here to preach, but because I had the courage to say yeah, but, I am HERE.
