Tuesday 3rd December The memories are so vivid in my mind of days gone by when our family business hit its peak. We built up powerful contacts with those in the trade and powerful politicians. However, it all turned out to be a mirage in the desert as it lasted but awhile and then burst. We learnt the hard way that trusting in the powerful left us more insecure, desolate and empty. We realized that only the Lord Jesus is worth knowing and obeying. In the first reading, Isaiah presents a contrast between earthly rulers and the One to come. The One to come, is the Lord Jesus Himself who revealed the face of our Father and taught us to have a loving relationship with Him. Having contact with the Lord Jesus assures us of His justice in favour of those who are weak and lowly. When we believe in His righteousness over our lives, His perfect peace and security is assured. In sharp contrast, knowing the powerful and the elite, and not knowing our Saviour is the root cause of disorder, evil or disaster. According to the Old Testament, not knowing God or not giving Him the first place drove the people into exile where they died of hunger or remained starving. If only they had come back to God, He would have healed their iniquities. In the Gospel, the Lord Jesus knowing our inability to connect with Him due to our fallen nature, comes to share His Divine Life with us. He tells us of His loving relationship with the Father from whom He draws divine power. That power He wants to share with those who desire to surrender their lives to Him and live for only His purpose. Such are called disciples or “little ones”. They are the ones who approach God with simplicity of heart and mind. In contrast, sometimes our positions or qualifications in life give us a false sense of security to see us through life. Today, we are reminded of St. Francis Xavier who though born into a noble family, experienced the love of the Lord Jesus and travelled as far as India and China to spread His love. Our call is to also share the Father’s love and place our trust in the Lord Jesus alone.
