I posted this earlier on another page but I think it is relevant here and I want to say HI anywho :) The question was what would your ultimate alien look like. I have given this WAAAAAAY too much though but... Aliens are, by definition, alien and so it will be a miracle if we can put it into a kingdom (ie. animalae, plantae, fungi...). However aliens that make it to Earth or even into orbit round their own planet will have some characteristics. 1) They will be air breathers and probably have dry skin because without fire and the biological need to make fire there can be little metallurgy and no chance of experimenting with basic electrical circuits under water. They may use biological ships but all our biological knowledge was gained with the help of many other sciences like optics and chemistry which both need glass and ceramics and metals. 2) Being dry skinned air breathers they will have to have some sort of waterproof skin covering. Since the same atoms form the same molecules everywhere in the universe then it is a good bet that the skin is made of something that is like keratin or cellulose with a waxy or fatty substance forming the moisture barriers. 3) Unless there is something wrong with the way we understand chance then the possibility of them looking like us is very slim but they will probably have all their sense organs clustered near the front of their bodies, maybe on a lump near the brain and limbs with manipulation organs capable of forging iron and assembling microcircuits or we would never meet them in space. 4) This is just a hunch but I think they and we would be mutually poisonous or toxic (no mating with alien princesses but no getting eaten by martians either ) This is because so many earthly creatures have a toxic biochemistry to us, especially plants and fungi. They could be intoxicating though like alkaloids. 5) They will have a long history of co-operation and specialisation. You cant build a ship to the stars on your own from scratch, I mean making the shovel to mine the sand to make the glass for the dials from scratch. and we all have to learn from someone. 6) If human history is anything to go by, they will be coming here because they want something and they think they have a good chance of getting their tentacles on it.
