I posted this to Tumblr but I feel like maybe it should be said here too? To everyone calling the Ferguson PD “incompetent”: Stop it. Don’t take these evil people, these people who are taking the respect that most Americans have been taught to feel for the police and twisting it so they can control the story that’s being told and protect the murderer in their ranks, and reduce them to the level of Keystone Kops. They’re a lot of things, but in the masterful way they have changed the narrative to be about looters who won’t obey curfew, and uppity journalists who impede their ability to “protect and serve,” and a drug-addict thug who terrorized local store owners and attacked an unsuspecting officer of the law, they have shown that they are more than competent. If you’re reading this, of course you don’t believe the bullshit they’re handing down. You’re smarter than that. But there is a whole country out there, full of people who were taught since they were kids that police are their friends, and you can always trust a police officer, and that you should always do what he says. And when all of those people see what CNN or Fox News decides to show them, they buy the story that the Ferguson PD are selling, hook line and sinker. And these aren’t stupid people, understand. These are just people who trust those in power. Like we all should be able to do. There’s a lot of names you can call a group of people who can so shamelessly, cravenly play upon people’s feelings the way the Ferguson PD are doing right now. But “incompetent” isn’t one of them.
