I posted this to my own wall, but thought I should copy it up here to get some more opinions. I have some questions for my fellow comic collectors...noticing a trend from my LCS and Im wondering if its all over, or just a quick money grab by what used to be a quality LCS...now keep in mind I havent maintained a subscription in many, many moons until recently with the release of Figment. (my wife and I met 25 years ago working that attraction at Epcot...so its something special to us), so maybe Im just too out of the loop today with the hobby being so mainstream, but... 1. Previews: This used to be FREE to subscribers...a perk for maintaining a subscription. Now my LCS is charging 3.00 a copy for subscribers. (4.50 cover price to non-subscribers, which rightly they always have). Since they are always left with multiple copies at the end of the month that end up on the free - take one table anyway...I find this bothersome.I mean - the dang thing after all IS just a monthly catalog from Diamond after all to get people to pre-order! 2. Variant covers: in the past, variant covers if the store got them, were distributed into subscribers boxes at the cover price. Now it seems they are taking the 1:50s, 1:100s, etc, marking them up to the going rate, and putting them directly out at that inflated rate before letting them hit either subscribers boxes that requested them, or the shelf, even on release date. 3. I noticed on FCBD that the FCBD edition Hero Clix this year was priced at 5 bucks...where in the past its been free. Also yesterday, the 75th Batman cape was priced at 10 bucks. (although it was advertised from DC as a giveaway, and another store/chain in town gave theirs away for free - although they had a very limited amount and they were gone early). Now I know the retailer does pay something for these things, just like the books at FCBD, at a VERY low price because it it meant to be an incentive to get people in the stores...but it seems like more and more its getting to be a charge per item, at least at my store. What are your experiences? Is this just my store making money grabs since a turnover of a majority of the ownership of the store to a new partner, or is this all becoming the norm today?
