I prefer to spend my hard earned money locally at small - TopicsExpress

I prefer to spend my hard earned money locally at small businesses. Although things may cost a bit more upfront, I look at it as an investment in keeping our community a great place to raise my family. That being said, I unfortunately could not purchase 6 new pairs of shoes from Duys yesterday as I had intended. It was not due to anything the store could control (or maybe they could have). You see around 4:30 yesterday afternoon I pulled up to the store front with my kids in tow. There were 2 men standing (actually leaning on the window of Duys), smoking, and talking. I am assuming that these men were patrons of The Old Time Inn. Due to my sons severe asthma, we waited in the car so he wouldnt have to walk through the plumes of smoke. As the men continued to talk and smoke, one of them began to urinate all over himself. My 14 year old son and 10 year old daughter were both completely aware and disgusted over what was happening (as was I). At that point we just left. My issue is twofold. One, if it isnt ok to smoke within X amount of feet from the door of a restaurant/bar, than why is it ok to stand directly in front of another retail establishment and smoke? Secondly, at what point does someone get cut off from service at a bar? It was clear that both men were intoxicated, as they were needing to lean on the window/wall to remain upright. The urinating on oneself only helped confirm the obvious. Yesterdays experience wasnt an isolated occurrence. Numerous times I have had to walk past someone smoking to enter a business in downtown Sandwich. On a few of those occasions, the individuals have also been intoxicated. I dont have problems with people going out and having a good time, but where is the dividing line? Why should your good time mean my children and myself have to not only witness but tolerate and ignore your indiscretions? I am disappointed that the money I intended to put back into our community has now gone to a big chain store in a different town and that I am beginning to not want to choose to shop in downtown Sandwich any longer.
