I promised and here is another excerpt from Fiji The Beginning.. “Wake up! Wake up,” Maya screamed when she opened her eyes to the glare of the sun and turned her head around to find her friends sleeping. “What! What!” Rosie jumped up, her hands swishing in the air, as if she was fighting someone. “Oh my god…Oh my god,” Kusum shouted as her eyes circled the disaster around them. Terrified, they suddenly went silent and grabbed onto each other tightly. Five sets of eyes, circled the barren land on which they were standing. Stunned with the transformed beauty to which they had docked to, they wondered if they had been moved to a different location, but that could not be, as the boat was still there. Aroma which greeted them on their arrival was gone, replaced by a disgusting stench. It wasn’t their imagination anymore, and the smell reminded them of the awful odour that was over Momi Bay on the dark night of Amawus. Further- more, a nuclear bomb seemed to have gone off on the island as they could only see charged remains and smoke, which was blanketing the entire magical place. Stricken with terror, they dashed forward towards the boat, constantly looking behind, fearing for their lives. Confused of everything around them, they scrambled into the boat, bumping into one another. It was a moment of relief when Maya and her friends found their only chance of getting back home, still intact. Still afraid of the environment they were in, and the possibility of an endless nightmare, Rosie pinched Maya, who winced and moved away. “Did I just wake up from a dream?” Rosie asked and looked around at the bewildered faces of her friends. For a few minutes they stared at each other, mystified and not knowing what to believe, reality, or just a horrific nightmare. Withdrawn into their own thoughts, they silently stared at the drastic scenery change around them. Finally realising that they were still alive, a glimmer of hope showed on their tired faces. “Thank goodness we are all safe and sound, but really…what happened?” Kusum asked in a reserved voice. “Was it my imagination, or was it real?” Rosie hesitated and looked at the eager faces. “Do you guys remember those mysterious, handsomely dressed, but ugliest forms that greeted us?” she asked but did not have to wait for an answer, as the heads around her started bobbing at the same time. Every detail they remembered, from the encounter with the old man, and the adventurous journey. Adding more to their nightmares was the boat, which seemed to have a mind of its own, and how could they forget the struggle, with the mighty little fish. Memories of the fierce and mean looking yellow eyes on the extraordinary beings were stuck in their heads. It wasn’t until the moment Maya Smith felt brave enough to share her nightmare that the ambiguity of it all was back.
