I promised earlier that Id post my experience of social services. The short version is that 2 hours after my twin girls were born, a midwife reported me to ss for being drowsy and non coherant after giving birth to my twin girls. The first couple of social workers we had were good ones, the last wasnt. In the end my husband & I were made to feel like criminals because both girls were developmentally behind. End of May 2012 the girls were put on the at risk register for mostly unfair reasons, at the time we were living in Northern Ireland. My husband & I decided to move to Norfolk to be nearer my family and in the hope that Norfolk social services would be more reasonable with us. We found a house to rent 3.5 miles from my parents and moved on 11th September 2012 (arrived at my parents house early hours of 12th). We slept at my parents house for 8 nights with my husband & I getting things unpacked during the day. it was the 14th and my husband & I got back to my parents house to find out Norfolk ss had been on the phone but had read the nor=tes from Northen Ireland & thought wed been through a rough time. Dad told them what had gone on and ss said they didnt want to do anything to stress us out more, a week after we moved my parents were going away for a week & ss said they wouldnt do anything till my parents were back from holiday. The day my parents came back, we got a knock at the door and it was someone from ss, she was really nice and we made one request which was for the information from Northern ireland to be read with an open mind and we explained some of what had gone on from our viewpoint, the main issues being conflicting information from different people, ss in Northern Ireland saying one thing and when we did it saying something else, twiasting things we said/did to mean what they wanted them to mean (distorting the truth badly in a few cases). Mid october and we have Transfer in conference, my husband & I were there along with my parents, health visitor and local sure start manager. My husband & I and my parents were expecting that Norfolk ss would say we hadnt been in Norfolk long enough for them to remove the girls from protection register, we were thinking that would come at the following conference. With each of the 4 concerns that Northern Ireland had said about us, we gave our answers and each one was effectively decided that it wasnt a concern. At the end of the meeting the decision was unaminous that not only could the girls come off the protection register but ss were closing the case, they did make 5 reccommendations which have all been done, the last being for a CAF to be put in place which our health visitor had said could happen. We still have the CAF in place mainly due to one of our twin girls having Global Developmental delay (approx 12-18 months behind). When the girls started nursery (3+ funding) January 2013, both were put on the SEN register and had IEPs. Our girl who has the problems has 1-1, the other who had the IEP based on speech & language was taken off the SEN register February this year. The one thing Im angry that ss in Northern Ireland did was making us feel like criminals for the girls being behind developmentally. On the other hand Norfolk ss were really reasonable, after talking to them on the phone Dad said he thought Norfolk would be more reasonable with us. There are some rotten social workers but there are a lot of good ones. Part of our problem in Northern Ireland was that our last social worker didnt have children of her own so I think was going by the book rather than using common sense.
