I put the note below on My Marymount as a news item, and added the following explanation as to why I have the guidelines that I do. Thought I would post it here as well: This is why I am so picky about HW: I assign pencil-and-paper HW bc I believe it is much, much better to promote student learning of mathematics, and it enables me to see your work, follow your steps, and help you along the way to prevent damaging point deductions on Tests. But, as you must know, it is much, much, much more work for me than just making you buy Web-Assign package and do all your work online, without showing your work. Each HW set for each student must be hand-graded by me, and scores entered individually on My Marymount every week, so that your grade is always up-to-date. I am happy to do the extra work, because I truly believe it will help you to master the material. BUT please dont make me WASTE my time doing these useless tasks: ➢ Hunting around for someones name or the section number (no name is just my favorite .... come on!!) ➢ Struggling with pages stuck together because of messy spiral fringes ➢ Trying to find what page goes with what because pages are not stapled ➢ Separating multiple assignments bc two or more sections are stapled together ➢ Dealing with messy cross-outs bc someone used a pen ➢ Sloppy graphs, not on graph paper Additionally, by following the guidelines of copying down each original problem, showing all your work, boxing your answer and CHECKING THE BACK OF THE BOOK TO VERIFY YOUR RESULT, you will be able to use your returned HW to help study for tests! If you turn in a list of answers, you will NOT get credit for the assignment, and it will not help you prepare for tests. Also please review the guidelines on Academic Integrity, and understand that I have NO tolerance for work which is copied from another student, from a Solutions Manual, or from the Solution Sets which I post. Sorry if this seems like a rant, I just want to make sure that we are crystal clear on what I expect, to make the year go more smoothly. Please believe that I really care about your success, and I have worked hard to structure the course in order to help YOU achieve the best outcome possible. We have to work as a team, and I promise to uphold my end. The rest is up to you ...
