I ran into a new Browser Plug-In today that makes Facebook quite a bit less annoying (& annoys Facebook so much they wont let me link to it!) by giving you MUCH more control over what you see in the way of, ads, suggestions, certain types of posts, etc. It also changes the new auto-playing videos back to the way they used to be (click to play), & lets you change font size/color/style, background, & a whole lot more (including making it so you dont accidentally Comment when you hit Enter/Return, & getting Facebook to display animated .gifs). Its called F.B. Purity, & you can read about, download, & install it from here--> fbpurity com/ (Replace the ) with a period (or just go to Cnet for a 5 Star review & the link to the version for your particular Browser here-> download.cnet/Facebook-Purity/3000-2378_4-75217054.html ... Facebook doesnt like this plug-in & blocks the URL from being posted). F.B.Purity has also got a Facebook page to help explain setting it up, (& the link to Cnet), & to keep you posted on updates here (If you Like the page)--> Fluff Busting Purity. While its up to you to decide if this is safe (despite what Facebook says) I have run my anti-virus as well as malwarebytes, & 3 highly rated online virus scanners since installing & they ALL come up 100% clean, & this plug-in has 5 star reviews from the Washington post, & Lifehacker sites as well as Cnet, just to name a few!!! *Pissed OFF!* So far I REALLY like it, & HIGHLY recommend it, for making Facebook a LOT less annoying, less cluttered, more readable, & a bit more secure from malware, due to the auto-playing video, & by keeping Facebook from tracking you quite so much by forcing it NOT to redirect you through Facebook when you click a link, (though of course it CANT make it anymore secure as far as Privacy concerns from what you post!). It works with Firefox, Opera, & Chrome, & Safari but not with I.E. (which I would recommend not using anyway). Check it out & let me know what you think... Next to dumping Facebook altogether (Still the best option, IF you have the will-power to do so, IMO), I think its by far the best thing I have found to improve this awful site in quite some time!!! It does/can take a bit of time to set-up, due to the number of tweaks & options it has, including custom text filters with the option of even using Boolean search strings, & further customization is possible with custom CSS rules, (unless you just use the default settings), but even the default settings make the site a LOT better, & its not hard to figure out how to set it up to fit you (with the possible exception of the custom CSS, which can be a bit tricky unless you know more about basic programing/website layout then I do--- which isnt much). PS. Facebook will give you a warning that the website isnt safe if you link off here, (It wouldnt let me post without putting in instead of in the URL, but just ignore the message if you get it, or Google it to get others opinions if you dont trust mine, (which I wouldnt), or you can go to download.cnet/Facebook-Purity/3000-2378_4-75217054.html for reviews & a link to download the plug-in ... Facebook just wants to keep you from having control, so it can better control you!!! PSS. Please DONT let any terms you may not understand, like custom CSS, or Boolean search strings scare you off. Those are just more advanced options it has, & it is REALLY quite simple to set up, & customized without them... Over 98% of it can be customized in less then 5 minutes by just hovering over the check boxes, & reading the simple pop-up explanations about what they do in plain English (IF you even need to read them, which most of you will not)... I just mentioned those options to try to excite some of my nerdier friends, & didnt use any of those options myself (Im not that smart, & way too lazy to use them, even if I did know how!), & If you read this entire post, you already read MUCH more then needed to set it up more thoroughly then I did. !! :p PSSS. While the version that Cnet reports is a older Greasmonkey script the new version of the plug-in does NOT require Greasemonkey (at least not in Firefox), though the Greasemonkey script is still available (IF thats the way you roll) You can also go directly to Mozilla for the Firefox version here-> https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fb-purity-cleans-up-facebook/ but for the other Browsers you will have to visit Cnet, the site itself, or Google for it, because Cnet detects your browser, & directs you to the download for the browser youre using so I cant easily get to them.
