I ran into a patient of mine today in the lobby of the hospital. - TopicsExpress

I ran into a patient of mine today in the lobby of the hospital. She has struggled mightily in the past to get her life together, and shes been doing amazingly well for the past 2-3 years (taking her meds, staying clean and sober). When we met, she told me that she hadnt seen me in awhile, because 5 weeks ago her 18-year-old son was shot in the back, and she has been spending every waking hour (and quite a few sleeping hours) at his bedside. He was just in the wrong neighborhood [of Baltimore] at the wrong time and now, if he survives, he will be a paraplegic. This is the truth of living Black in America, especially in the inner city. This happens every day (my patient population includes at least a dozen men and women who have lost their sons to gun violence in Baltimore). When will it end? How long will the rest of us, who live in predominantly white suburbs and dont have to factor stray bullets into our day-to-day existence, continue to ignore this terrible scourge?
