I read Martin being hailed as the modern-day Tolkien. So I bought the 4-ebook set. But apart from the authors ability to juggle so many characters, sub-plots and different realms with their own histories at the same time, GoT has nothing on LOTR. I read and re-read and re-watch LOTR for inspiration when all seem bleak, for dogged-determination amidst challenges, for courage in the face of uncertainty (or as Gimli said, certainty of death), and for good and honor prevailing. GoT gives us the bleak world of intrigue, power-grabbing moves and counter-moves, where honor only brings death, innocents killed is a necessity (not collateral damage), and the best, most heartless manipulators win. I cannot bring myself to even finish the books. Truly, if I want to savor whats in the mind and the machinations of kings and king makers I only need to read/watch The Tudors, and world history. So maybe Martins GoT is a sad commentary of our modern society. But I find watching/reading news mostly unpleasant as it is, (hence no TV at home). I certainly do not want my down time spent in all the gory politics of fictional worlds. And no more spending money on the next books in the apparently never-ending franchise. Besides, theres hardly anyone left to root for.
