I read Walter Bosley s fascinating and engaging Empire of the Wheel, Vol III: The Nameless Ones -- only $7.99 on Kindle -- and was quite impressed at his research, vision, and startling thesis, that malevolent, faceless, tentacled entities reach out to manipulate the minds of men to murder. What makes Walters theory even more uncanny is that the Slenderman lore has arrived at almost the exact same place. Slenderman -- a guy in a suit with no face and a bunch of tentacles -- can bring people (referred to as proxies) under his influence and make them carry out his evil schemes. The Slenderman concept can be traced to a 2009 web forum devoted to embarassing urban-legend believers and the paranormal community by creating fake ghost photos with spooky backstories. Slenderman was easily the most successful of the fake images, and people were motivated to create their own, as well as expand on others backstories. It took off wildly, with no single person guiding the stories, so we can only assume that the current story *just*feels*right* to the majority of people. Since the amateur authors probably arent cribbing from ancient California, and the ancient Californians couldnt have cribbed from future fan fiction, could it be that everyone -- including the sneering skeptic that produced the original Slenderman image -- was influenced by the same unseen force?
