I read the on-line version of the Press Democrat, and today, 9/21/14, I saw that there are several articles about gangs in Sonoma County, with a lot of detail. Despite the distressing nature of the prevalence of gangs in our communities, I noticed no mention of known gang presence focused around downtown Santa Rosa, or the Burbank Gardens or Juilliard Park neighborhoods. That’s a good thing and a credit to us for doing all we can to stay united and vigilant to prevent this here. I believe we can do even more. One thing I have learned over many years being a non violence peace activist, is that an assertive action for peace is more effective than a reaction to violence, after it gets out of control. With that in mind, I am hereby making a formal proposal with this Facebook posting to our Burbank Gardens Neighborhood Association Board and to all our residents, that we do something bold and assertive to keep the peace. I propose that we purchase a very large, professionally made, water resistant sign that says “Respect All People” on top, and underneath it “Respeto Todas Las Personas”. The sign would go on our Triangle Park, where motorists driving west on Maple would most easily see it before the Highway 12 on ramp. To pay for the sign, I might be able to get the non profit organization, Minimizing Occurrences of Violence in Everyday Society, of which, I am president of that board, to pay for it. That board has already approved the slogan “Respect for all people” as a core value that we believe in. I’m not sure if the board would approve to pay for the sign, but maybe. If not, I would be willing to lead a task force of Burbank Gardens Neighborhood residents to go door to door and ask for donations. Also, if there are any formal steps necessary with the City of Santa Rosa required by a sign ordinance, I would be willing to follow that process through. So, if you live in Burbank Gardens Neighborhood, and are reading this post, please reply with your opinion, and if you are on our Board, please initiate your process to decide on this proposal.
