I read this book couple of years ago. It is called ‘Entering Space: Creating a Spacefaring Civilization’ by Robert Zubrin, published in 1999. If you thought rocket science was complicated, maybe it was, but not anymore. This book is so well written I read it cover to cover couple of years ago. My math is not very good, so I mostly ignored math in his book and it was very understandable. It talks about settling Mars and eventually other parts of the galaxy. Check it out, you can find it in your local library, This guy established Mars society and had made quite a bit of progress since 1999 in relation to Mars settlement: marssociety.org/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Society This guy also has space industry company listed on NASDAQ. if you don’t find this book, try another library. Unlike other previous ‘dreamers’ he had concrete plan laid out in his book. I remember two most important things for the closer term of his plan: settling Mars is important for risk management purposes of Humanity in case of being hit by a large meteorite; this happened in the past and caused extinction of dinosaurs and possibly other species; and because Mars has some valuable resources that are scarce on earth. Hitting by a large meteorite can cause various adverse consequences that can range up to total annihilation of earth as a planet. The information presented in this book is very persuasive. The reason for that is also because, of cause, he is rocket scientist and businessman. The immediate relevance for Earth is: Monitoring large meteorites and developing technologies to spot them early enough and neutralize them before they hit the earth. Settling Mars including terra forming (gradually changing climate to habitable state) in case the meteorite cannot be diverted; and because of valuable resources on the planet; and just in case climate on our planet deteriorates to not (in)habitable state. The best countries to implement this solution are USA, Russia, France, UK, China and India. They should foster cooperation and make joint ventures in relation to these types of programs. The author describes how to commercialise these programs to aid financing of these programs. Governments of these countries should divert their money of military spent to these programs. Military industry is the easiest industry to change into space industry. These and other governments should spend their budget more on these rather than military purposes and cooperation between these countries would be ideal for them to be safe from each other and to agree to spend their money on more worthwhile purposes. Most of other countries can of cause do their bit as well. Australia and some country in South America have very powerful telescopes that can or do assist NASA in monitoring large meteorites. At the moment I do not believe we possess technology to divert meteorites. If and when we know that we are going to be hit by one we may or may not, at that stage, have enough time to produce it. More support by various governments would certainly be beneficial in this area, including Mars society and would expedite these programs.
