This headline is incorrect. Francis didnt declare that evolution and the Big Bang are real. He declared that THEISTIC evolution and a THEISTIC Big Bang (where a god made them happen) are real. The actual theories of evolution and the Big Bang do not require the the further hypothesis that theres almighty invisible tinkerer. But thats not the part of the story that interests me. The Catholic church has been promoting its own theistic versions of actual scientific theories for decades. What interests me is this bit about the god not being a magician with a magic wand. If he really meant that, doesnt that reduce the god to just a guy operating within the bounds of physical law? Incapable of performing miracles of any kind? I thought magic was a big part of the attraction.
