I realized today the red ribbon that runs through the culture today. There is a message that its okay to ignore the big things, as long as you observe all the little rules. What brought this to mind was a story about a public school that suspended a elementary school child for making the shape of a gun with their fingers. No reasonable person would feel threatened by this. But schools are going nuts over that, and ignoring the big things. Big things like a high illiteracy rate, complete disrespect for teachers, no accountability.
