I received a great birthday gift back in July... After 2 1/2 years in Chicago (2 winters to long!), I got a call to get me back to L.A. to head up the corporate partnership efforts for the LA Marathon. Being a native Los Angeleno, the decision was easy but I also knew that this would be a challenge... A welcomed challenge! Now, I was aware of this annual event but man theres so much that goes into it. Community, Health and Fitness. My job is to garner sponsorships but my goal along the way is to increase the 5% of African American participants in our events. I mention events because 26.2 miles takes on a huge commitment but we also have our 5K (3 miles at Dodgers Stadium) which takes the day before the big race... You can run or walk it and even raise funds for your favorite charity. We also have a free 2-day expo at the Convention Center on Friday and Saturday that will feature the best in health & fitness including the latest in training gear and fashion from our title partner, Asics. Or, become of the 6,000 volunteers along the course - this is a major undertaking but trust me it will be a great experience! Finally, with our Stadium to the Sea route through downtown, Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Century City, Santa Monica is where well host the Family Finish Festival. I had the pleasure of going to the recent Chicago and New York marathons and the Finish is really something special to see. Sure the elite athletes are cool to watch but its those who have run for a cause or made a commitment to loose weight or the ones who are running because a loved one cant run anymore that really makes it special. Whether its their first or their 30th (yes, we about 160 Legacy Marathoners!). To see them reunited with their family and friends after 26.2 miles... You see it all!
