I received and email today from a student. I hope this will remind you of what I stand for and why I ran for office. Thank you for the opportunity you have given me to serve you. Dear Mr. Boyd, My name is Sarah and I am a college sophomore. I’m interviewing politicians for a class project to learn about how they entered their field and what advice they might have for students interested in politics. As someone who really cares about my community, one day I hope to be a politician. What advice would you give to me? Sincerely, Sarah Martinez My answer. Dear Sarah, Someone wise said, Find something you love doing that you can make a living doing, and you will never work a day in your life. I do not classify my self as a politician. The job of a State Representative is a part-time job, with full-time duties. I make a living as a Land Surveyor and a Registered Forester. But, serving the people has great satisfaction. For many years, I voted and did not feel the job was being done in a correct manner. I stepped forward to try to make a difference. My first attempt for this office (or any elected office) was in 2007 , at the age of 53 years. We had two children, who I was helping to get an education and prepare for life. I lost the first election by about 300 votes out of 8,500 cast. The young man who defeated me did not live up to the promises he had made. On December 10th of that year, I became a grandfather of a baby girl. On October 30th of 2008, my son and the father of the baby girl was kill in an automobile accident. January 7, 2009 my daughter gave me a grandson. Highs and lows that I had never had before. So, it was a hard decision, but in 2011 I stepped out in faith that I could do the right thing for the people of District 19 and my grandchildren. I was elected. This is not an easy job, but it is vital to the state and its people. I still make a living in forestry and surveying, but I dedicate what ever time is necessary to support my people and communities. This year has been tough on the business end. My time has been consumed by the fact a devastating tornado hit a path across the heart of my district. Meeting go on continually to assure the needs of the residents of the district. I love working for the people and hearing from them, even if we disagree. I am always happy to explain why I voted for or against an issue. I try to use good common sense. Something I always thought was lacking before. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, let me know. God bless, Randy
