I remember the 2 years we lived at Yokota. There was a wood burning stove in the center of our little house. Cherry blossoms in the neighborhood. Every spring the locals had a festival where kimono-clad ladies danced in a circle. They would invite us kids to dance with them--what a thrill! On Boys Day people would put out a special fish-shaped flag. On Girls Day, we got to wear kimonos to school, visit a shrine, and eat special white, fluffy delicious candy. A popular hobby was collecting fancy scented japanese pencil erasers. We had a mamasan named Kasako. She would color with us I remember. Our house was next to Old Tanaka. We visited Mount Fuji, so beautiful. I remember being surprised that the roadside toilets were basically holes in the floor, nothing to sit on. In school we learned origami and Japanese culture. I still remember Koni chiwa Gomeno sai Sayonara Happy memories!
