So I told him it would be much cleaner and more accurate to record the total height of the tank, shine a flashlight into the tank, dip the tape measure in until it just touched the surface of the oil in the tank, and measure the depth to the oil from the top of the tank, and subtract it from the total height of the tank, which would give you the inverse measurement which would equal the oil level as measured from the bottom bottom of the tank. After about 10 seconds, the EUREKA! look on his face was priceless...
