I sat next to my friend as the church service started and my assumptions coming into the sanctuary of his home church were immediately confirmed. Doing a Superman quick periphery glance to either side of me, the division inside of those four walls was painfully obvious, but as I listened to the pastor’s message, I came to the sad realization of that same condition that exists in most churches today. Over here, you have the older conservative, more distinguished sect in one corner…the younger, hand-raising, more liberal group over here…Mr. Visitor and his beautiful family off by themselves to the left…the lukewarm/fair-weather bunch that secludes themselves over to the right. I did say Superman quick, didn’t I?! But it all culminated to the forefront of the room, NOT where the message was being delivered, but to wall directly behind the pastor…that wooden depiction that should have been the sole source for our gathering on that Sunday morning… …The Cross Of Christ! Paul stated it perfectly in 1 Corinthians 2:2 (TLB): “For I decided that I would speak only of Jesus Christ and his death on the cross.” In other words, “I could care less about your agendas & your politics, your wealth & your stature, your freedom & your pre-conceived notions. I’m here to preach one thing and one thing ONLY!” We become so drowned in our self-piety that we miss out on His glorious deity! We aim for the heart and end up shooting ourselves in the foot! And it’s not that WE are missing out…it’s that so many miss out because of us! Jesus did NOT say, “Hey, I’m one of a handful of ways for you to meet my Father…ya know, in your own time. No rush.” John 14:6 (NLT): “Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. NO ONE can come to the Father except through me.” (emphasis added) “If you care more about flaunting your Christian freedom than promoting Christian unity, you’re probably not free. You are actually a slave to your so-called freedom.” [Jefferson Bethke] One way…one message: Jesus Christ and Him crucified! Good News, people! GOOD NEWS!!!
