I see a lot of negativity starting to form over the ice water challenge. A post is circulating showing ‘America’ dumping buckets of water over their heads while a child in ‘Africa’ sips from a small cup held by a dirt covered hand. While I truly appreciate the issue the post is attempting to shed light on, I have to question the method of its delivery. Why must we take the good intentions of people who are actually DOING something in an effort to make positive change and scrutinize them? People already feel powerless enough to effectuate change without their efforts being chastised by the very people who claim to want it. Instead, this challenge can be seen as the beginning of a great movement, empowering others to realize that small acts can amount to HUGE influence! People see this and say, Hey I can do that! and then they DO! Great first steps! Now, what is the next step? What else can I DO? It’s time for this compassionate, take-action energy to evolve! Let’s not stomp out the spark to the flame we are trying to build.
