I sent this message, via email to all the Hunt County Commissioners and the County Judge: The recent raid and seizure at the Barchard Shelter near Wolfe City has caused attention to be focused on the animal population problem in Hunt County. I have a suggestion. It will require courage, for it will meet heavy resistance. Do you have the courage to support such legislation? Pass a county ordinance, requiring ALL dogs and cats, over the age of 6 months, to be spayed or neutered. Failure to spay or neuter should carry a fine large enough to make the expense of surgery very attractive, say around $1,000. No, make that $2,000. Those who dont want to sterilize their pets can apply for a breeders license, issued by the county. Only those who meet certain criteria and pass a stringent inspection will be allowed a license. NO BACKYARD BREEDERS. No accidental breeding, either. Anyone who doesnt want to comply can pay big fines or move. Being pro-active about the pet population problem will cut down on the number of animals in shelters, and on the number of animals that have to be killed in shelters, and on the number of animals running wild, wreaking havoc on domestic animals and wildlife alike. It seems a shame that we need a law to tell people to do what they ought to be doing anyway, but it does appear that the need is very real. I currently live with four dogs and three cats. None of them is capable of reproduction. Three of the dogs were rescues. One cat was a rescue, and the other two were thrown out and ended up here, where we gave them a shot at life. Every one of our critters has been to the vet for sterilization. Anyone can do likewise. We even took three neighborhood cats, to the vet and had them neutered. Not our cats, but they kept showing up here to eat and mark their territory, so we took care of them. Oh, I think they will have cute babies, just doesnt cut it for an excuse anymore. There are plenty of cute babies at the local shelter. And, now it appears that we have one less shelter to pick from. Incidentally, our niece got her dog from the Barchard Shelter, and we got our last canine addition from there, just this past April. The shelter was crowded, but the animals were healthy and well cared for. Our dog came neutered, vaccinated, house trained, heartworm negative, and with a collar, leash, and a bottle of flea spray, all for $50. Thanks, David Nunn 903-450-3943
