I should admit that I have attempted (heavy on that word) at fanfic before (if writing about Pride & Prejudice is fanfic). And, I love the idea of fandoms (Sherlock, Harry Potter, The Mortal Instruments, The Darkest Minds, and probably some others I cant think of right now are ones that I enjoy). I love that a community comes together over a show/movie/book series and bonds. Theres nothing quite like finding another person who wants to discuss all things HP. But, sometimes it seems like it can be quite aggressive (Amanda Abbington, who plays Mary on Sherlock, received death threats for playing that character) and at times makes me question being part of fandom, the treatment of writers, and simply how we treat other people. Cassandra Clare (whose books I have loved and reread and whose movie adaptation I watch repeatedly) discussed writing fan fiction along with Sarah Rees Brennan and how that has impacted their writing careers. It truly saddens me to see the judgement given to people who write fanfic, not just outside of that community but within it.
