I sing in this choir made up of an incredibly nice group of people.... over the past year and a half, we have made some beautiful music together under the inspirational leadership a true Maestro and musical genius, Ed Mavrinac. People always ask me of all things, what are you doing singing in a choir???? For some its a simple answer, for others its a bit more than that. Some people just want to feel the joy of singing... some people want to remember those loved ones that have left this world... a fond memory... some want to forget. Our Maestro told us this quote from German novelist Berthold Auerbach, which I think sums it up quite eloquently, “Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” I am much less dusty thanks to these wonderful people and Ed. Our latest memory took place at the main Cathedral in Zagreb, Croatia. A full house, Croats and non-Croats alike (its still tourist season) stood, listened and cheered as we did our thing. We witness the power of song in action and watching the emotions and tears in the eyes of our guests is an experience in itself. I wont even talk about the setting... this incredible structure, the art, the décor, the shrine to Cardinal Stepinac... a touchstone for everyone who feels a connection to all that is beautiful and good about Croatian culture and heritage... how fortunate we were to sing here! It was something else to sing Tebi Grade Moj (To you, my city) to the citizens of Zagreb but this one was my favourite on that day. We have sung this song many times, but our choir member Andrea Racki-Mahovlich added another dimension to the final chorus and elevated the performance to another level... listen for it and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did... hopefully some of the dust will have cleared from you as well as a result.....
