I sleep with the receiver unit of a baby monitor next to me on my bed stand, so I can hear Boo-Boo if he happens to raid the deck during the night. One added benefit to this device, is that on weekend mornings when I actually get to sleep until sunrise, I am gently awakened to the wonderful sounds of nature, as the critters in the woods begin to stir. At first dawn, the night chorus of spring peepers gently fades, I hear first, a single tweet of a Robin. Then one by one, other birds join in. The guttural chut-chut-chut of the orioles, the cute little nasal notes of the nuthatch, and maybe a tap-tap-tap from a Downy Woodpecker on a nearby dead tree. During this mornings crescendo I heard different voices. I recognized the melodic warble of the Veerys, but I dont normally hear them up close to the feeders. Some species of birds are primarily insect eaters, and they typically do not frequent our offerings. On several past occasions I have witnessed these summer forest birds at my feeders after late unexpected snowfalls, when the snow inhibits their ability to gather nutrition through normal means. I believe the unseasonably cold temperatures of late may have temporarily decreased the amount of insects in the immediate area, causing these Veerys to kick into survival mode. Crank up your volume, here is a sample of my morning ear candy.
