I spent the morning reading and rereading Mr. Putin’s Op-Ed in The New York Times and I believe that he might have outlined the best plan for what America should do and how we should respond. It is quite simple actually, Mr. Putin wisely recommends that we avoid using force against Syria; we avoid using the language of force in discussing solutions to the problem in Syria; and, that we return to the path of civilized diplomatic and political settlement. If we, as Americans, are truly exceptional (as our President stated on Tuesday) then we must be the change that we believe must happen in the world! We must be better. We must aim higher. We must do things differently. We must set the bar so high that everyone else must jump to touch it. If we really believe that we are exceptional (and I mean if we really really believe it) then we must commit ourselves to charting a path that leads the world to a better and safer place. At this moment, we are not acting as if we are exceptional. I challenge the President to be the example and show the world what “American exceptionalism” (if it does exist) looks like!
