I spoke with Shafia M. Monroe of ICTC today. I was giving my support for ICTC to represent my interest as a Black midwife at a greater midwifery table. I told Shafia, and I am going to say it publicly. She, on behalf of ICTC, doesnt have to check in with me about support when she is pushing my interest at the table. I trust that ICTC will report back to me (about the situation) and interject/speak-up at the right times. If that doesnt happen, or if I feel I am being misrepresented, I know how to speak-up at the appropriate time in the appropriate environment. We HAVE to stick together, and WE AND ICTC bear some responsibility for that. ICTC is not the only agency to represent Black doulas and midwives... There are other agencies such as NABCC - but please believe we are not stepping on each others feet! The mission of NABCC is different than that of ICTC BUT WE BOTH HAVE A COMMON INTEREST and that is Self preservation! There can be different approaches to solving an equation. Black midwives and doulas have to make sure that our voice is heard and that we are in unity. If we disagree, lets do that in the back room like family. We know why we are dying at alarming rates and together we know what to do about. Lets own it. We must get together as family in the birth community and discuss OUR Agenda... I hope that will happen in the next year.
