I stayed in Baguio for 10 years (mid-1970s to mid-1980s) and was privileged with a glimpse of the city of pines before it was ravaged by the magnitude 8 earthquake in 1990 and the rapid growth in commerce and population that followed. This was the misty, magical Baguio of afternoon fog, wet roads reflecting city lights after a drizzle, and folks greeting each other in the street. Everyone I know has childhood memories of Baguio and I think every Filipino in this archipelago, especially those in the Visayas and Mindanao, should have one opportunity in their lifetime to experience this national treasure before it is gone forever.
