I stopped by for lunch and a quick walk about in the fabled port - TopicsExpress

I stopped by for lunch and a quick walk about in the fabled port city of Malacca. Its a melange of Portuguese, Dutch, Tamilian, Arab, Chinese and British influences. The Malaysians have done a great job of preserving this heritage and the old quarter still carries the past forward. I have some pictures here. The first two are of a Hindu temple reflecting the Portuguese influence on its architecture, while the mosque next door has a distinctly Chinese look. I had lunch at a Tamil eatery called Kaveri Tiffins and Meals which served an authentic madrasi meal on banana leaves and the various courses were ladled from gleaming stainless ateel pails. The servers were from Puducottai and Karaikudi and live in a room provided by the owner and do twelve hour shifts seven days a week. While leaving I spied a glass case of colorful sweetmeats. This was the first time I saw jalebis in many colors.
