"I take public transportation. I pay 75 cents a ride — $1.50 every day to get back and forth to work, for 4-5 days. That 75 cents to get there and 75 cents back." "This isn’t my first job. I had other jobs, but they were too far out and I didn’t have a way to get there. This is basically the first job I ever stayed on for a whole year and some months." This recent Forbes story (dated July 19) narrates the story of Carman Iverson, a 28yr old mom of four children who works at a McDonald in Kansas City, MO for $7.35/hr. As the story unfolds, it clearly underscores the importance of public transportation as a key lifeline for her and many such folks in similar conditions to get to jobs that help them sustain a livelihood. As a transportation professional, it leaves me wonder how the needs of these working class Americans like Carman Iverson who live below the poverty-line are factored into the discussions/negotiations that happen in Washington, DC when Federal $$ are allocated for transportation. Eager to know what you think. forbes/sites/laurashin/2013/07/19/how-she-lives-on-minimum-wage-one-mcdonalds-workers-budget/
