I think Californians are not addressing the current drought with the sense of urgency it requires. Since as a fisherman Im probably affected a little more than the rest of my friends - for now (And for now are really the key words in this sentence), let me give you a little run-down of whats happening. The situation is really bad in California, even though water at this point still comes out of our taps; but if current predictions hold true, your faucets may run dry next year. Imagine that for a second... hard to do? Yeah. OK, here are some visual aids to ponder: 1. Fresh Water Outflow from the Delta has been hovering around zero since May. That means were diverting so much water from the Sacramento and all its tributaries that the Sacramento River at this point in time already does NOT flow to the ocean any longer. 2. Most of our major reservoirs as of this date are already down to between 14% and 36% of their total capacity and its only the end of July..... 3. The El Nino we were hoping for was eaten up by some other weather event in the southern hemisphere - I dont quite understand how that happened, but it did. And that means that it may not rain this coming winter. I truly hope Im wrong about this part, because we are totally not prepared for that to happen. Nonetheless, the chances for another dry winter are not slim. Ill leave it at that for now. But please do think about what you will ask of your government when the water trucks come rolling down your street every Wednesday to top off your 50 gallon drum with your weekly ration. You might want to start asking that exact question of your representatives BEFORE it comes to that.
