I think one of the key things in training VT, especially when training with a partner that has base skill sets, is how long can you keep everything together. Good VT possesses many different elements all happening at the same time. One must have basic sitting/rooting and control of their frame (facing, knees/hips/torso as one unit), both sides live, power from ground into the elbow out forearm(no stiffness in forearm), aim (chasing spine)..., then there are the elements of sensitivity and timing. The errors of your VT come out during gor sau sessions, when things get more random in our training. Everything will break down at a certain point of intensity and speed/power, as for the most part IMO we are trying to work on our line of entry, recovery, and ability to stay in close range, while maintaining a sense of equanimity, support and recycling. When you try for too much power in your striking, you may lose sensitivity, aim, frame, and the same goes if you try for too much speed or position, its a play between all these things, too much of any one of them and you lose something else. Next is too string it all together with someone that can at the least play along with you a bit. If you can only go one step after a initial motion (like in stepping dan chi sau, step in with tan hit...), then something is being lost when your partner responds,,,the goal is to go 2, 3 or 4 steps beyond initial motion, and keep it all together...In VT when we train with one another, its over kill as no other type of fighter will respond like your VT partner, so we go thru the motions, keeping everything in a VT frame of action and see how far we can push it till it breaks down, then repeat over and over again. Then by way of experience in this way of training, if you meet a fighter and can gain the close in range where we shine, you should have little problems dealing with it then...At that point, its all about your ability to close the distance and secure it!
