I think the one most distinguishing characteristic of a successful Unschooler is that they find their own answers. They do their own research. They dont wait for an answer. They dont accept the pre-packaged answer. How do we model that for our kids? We dont ask for answers that we can find ourselves. We do our own research. It makes sense to ask someone about their experience or opinion. That cant be googled. However, it makes no sense to ask what is the capital of Portugal. Since we all have Facebook, we all have access to virtually every piece if data ever known to man. Its at our fingertips. We dont need to ask for facts. We shouldnt ask for facts. Frankly its lazy. We value and retain information that we obtain ourselves much more than we value spoon fed data. How do we show our children how to succeed as Unschoolers? By being successful Unschoolers ourselves. I love to see questions that ask for others experience. What did you learn from unschooling 3 teenagers? Is a great question. What are the homeschool regulations in Arkansas? Not so much. How did you deal with those regulation? Sure. What are they? Google that. How can we encourage our kids to take responsibility for their own learning if we dont take responsibility for ours?
