I think the reason I love working with young people is, in the end, a selfish one -- as much as I want it to be altruism. Creating art with young men and women, watching them learn what art is and that its true use is to make people know themselves, be it through tears or gasps or laughter or awed silence, watching them change the breath of a room of 200-something people or just make one persons jaw drop -- it makes me forget that the rest of the world, with all its ludicrous prejudices and tragic events, could ever contain anything but good. The cold equations of money, war, politics, pettiness, confusion about life and about the future -- all melt away. And its not escapism, not a way to dodge reality, but a special and separate kind of reality. Our kids growing up, loving each other, and being happy SHOULD be more important than anything else. SHOULD be more important than the worlds problems. SHOULD be what what we are doing all the time, with all our hearts. Love all. Trust a few. Do wrong to none. Thats what we can teach them, and thats what they teach us. Okay sorry about being schmaltzy next time Ill tell you an anecdote about falafel or something. Its gonna be great, trust me.
