I thought I would list my favorite ghost movies of all time (as of 2014). Along with each title, I am listing one actor/actress from the film instead of the director or the year. I am not including movies with fake ghosts like the original HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL. William Castle didnt provide any ghost stories that I found frightening (e.g.,13 GHOSTS); however, his non-ghost movies that featured psychopaths (STRAIT-JACKET and HOMICIDAL) were terrifying. Anyway, my personal list: 1. THE UNINVITED (Ray Milland) 2. THE INNOCENTS (Deborah Kerr) 3. THE HAUNTING (Julie Harris) 4. DANSE MACABRE (CASTLE OF BLOOD) (Barbara Steele) 5. THE SHINING (Jack Nicholson) 6. THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE (Roddy McDowall) 7. GHOST STORY (Fred Astaire) 8. THE OTHERS (Nicole Kidman) 9. THE SIXTH SENSE (Bruce Willis) 10. STIR OF ECHOES (Kevin Bacon) I dont know if you would include THE RING (Naomi Watts), scary though it was, or BLACK SUNDAY (Barbara Steele) as ghost movies. The Boris Karloff film BLACK SABBATH might be considered a ghost story in the first two of the three segments. I realize that television is full of paranormal stories, often re-enactments of real events, with plenty of ghostly visitations; however, my list only deals with theatrical films. I am not including the gallo films because they are often long on gore and short on logic. Dario Argentos schtick is to plant a clue that we come back to later as an alleged explanation for the happenings. DEEP RED is the best of these, but is a straight murder mystery with no supernatural aspects. SUSPIRIA, INFERNO, and MOTHER OF TEARS are fairly good, but they deal with nasty witches rather than ghosts. The same with his version of DRACULA -- atypical Argento and fairly good, but more of a remake of of Hammers HORROR OF DRACULA than Bram Stokers novel. Anyway, this is my subjective list.
